“We see it at the bottom of the hill, and we’re like, well, we wouldn’t be running up that hill. Nobody runs up a ski jump; how steep is that?” Lori Campbell is one of 24 competitors from across Canada to take part in the inaugural season of Canada’s Ultimate Challenge, a new reality show from CBC that debuted on Feb. 16, 2023.A member of Montreal Lake Cree Nation and a two-spirit Indigenous woman, Campbell said the decision to take part in the show was “the opportunity of a lifetime.”

As one-fourth of the red team, Campbell and her squad mates followed the lead of coach Donovan Bailey, who she said was “phenomenal” to work with. For Campbell, that means being visible for fellow Indigenous, queer and two-spirit women of all ages, as a strong, determined competitor pushing her own limits on a national stage.

“You only get the opportunity to be on the first episode of the first season of a new show like this once, right?”
