Oppo is poised to unveil the Find N5, a foldable phone expected to be thinner than a pencil, challenging the current benchmarks set by Honor. While Samsung is expected to adopt a similar design from its Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, Oppo aims to push the boundaries of foldable phone design with its ultra-thin profile. The Find N5's slim design raises questions about the ideal balance between thinness and durability in foldable devices.
The rumor mill is churning with anticipation for Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone, but several brands are already in the foldable game. Samsung, for instance, unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition a few months ago, a limited-edition ultra-thin foldable exclusive to Korea and China. Insider reports suggest Samsung will adopt the same design for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 this year, marking a significant development for the Korean tech giant. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 unfolds to a slim 5.
6mm thickness and expands to 12.1mm when folded. The Galaxy Z Fold SE, however, achieves impressive reductions, measuring 4.9mm when unfolded and 10.6mm when folded. This is a remarkable feat for Samsung, yet it still falls short of Honor's advancements. The 2023 Magic V2 foldable boasted a thickness of 4.7mm unfolded and 9.9mm folded. Honor's successor, the Magic V3, launched last year, took it even further, measuring a mere 4.4mm unfolded and 9.2mm folded. I initially thought surpassing this level of thinness would be challenging, but Samsung's efforts demonstrate the complexities involved in matching Honor's ambitious design. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is not expected to become even thinner compared to the SE, a new foldable phone is anticipated to surpass even Honor's slim designs. Called the Oppo Find N5, it is slated for unveiling next month. Oppo has been a key player in pushing Samsung to step outside its comfort zone regarding foldable phone design. While Samsung made incremental updates to its Fold and Flip models, Oppo introduced a Fold-type design that expanded the display in the folded state, offering a more comfortable user experience. Oppo then followed up with a Flip-type phone featuring a large cover screen, forcing Samsung to adopt these designs rather than leading the market. If a recent teaser is accurate, Oppo will continue to innovate in foldable phone design. An image showcases an unfolded foldable phone thinner than a standard pencil. As seen in the image, the camera module is absent, which would typically add thickness to a part of the phone. However, a foldable phone thinner than a 7mm pencil isn't entirely novel. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is also anticipated to be thinner than a pencil, with the current Fold 6 already exceeding this threshold.Fortunately, another Oppo Find N5 teaser provides a clearer understanding of the unfolded handset's thickness. The video depicts a Find N5 unit placed under a sheet of paper, revealing that the next-generation Oppo foldable phone is slightly thicker than four ID cards from China, each measuring approximately 1mm. This equates to a thickness of roughly 4mm when unfolded, thinner than the Honor Magic V3. Folded, it is expected to measure around 9mm, also thinner than the V3. This development prompts me to anticipate Honor's response with an even thinner V4 model this year. However, I also harbor some concern about this trend. At what point does thinness become detrimental for smartphones, particularly foldables? We desire these phones to be as durable as possible, which might explain Samsung's reluctance to match its Chinese counterparts. I express this as an iPhone user eagerly awaiting the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air and the potential foldable iPhone that may follow. If the Oppo Find N5 is unveiled in February in China, we might see it at MWC 2025. However, this doesn't guarantee an immediate European launch for the foldable device
