OPINIONISTA: Is Davos a panacea or a pretext for elitism? By Sizwe Mbele

Every year more than two thousand of the world’s most powerful business leaders, international political leaders, economists, celebrities and journalists gather at the tiny Swiss Alpine ski resort of Davos to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world.

By the late 1990s the Bretton Woods architecture of the “new world order” had left deep scars. The seclusion and predominance of the “winner takes all” principle, whether of a socioeconomic nature or eco-environmental kind, was everywhere to be seen — from rising global inequality to extreme concentrations of wealth.

To be fair, after years of warnings, most business leaders, politicians and economists seem to have got the message. Climate change and extreme weather events have rocketed to the top of the list of dangers facing the world economy, according to theAfter decades championing globalisation, the WEF now fears that rising inequality, protectionism and nationalist politics could send the world economy “sleepwalking” into another crisis.

Indeed, Oxfam’s 2018 global inequality report, released on the back of Davos in 2019, is a telling reminder that rather than pushing for systemic change, the Davos agenda only reinforces our lopsided economic reality.

It will work in favour of human traffickers, ‘blessers’ and criminal syndicates.

OPINIONISTA: Netanyahu’s victory heralds a future too ghastly to contemplateOPINIONISTA: Netanyahu’s victory heralds a future too ghastly to contemplateFollowing Prime Minister Benjamin ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu’s victory in the Israeli elections, the country is faced with a future that will bring increasing international isolation and accelerated militarisation. Far from being a blueprint for peace, it is instead a vision that will visit misery and discontent upon the country.

OPINIONISTA: View from afar: To attract young voters, parties should address racial justiceOPINIONISTA: View from afar: To attract young voters, parties should address racial justiceThis is the most important election in South Africa since the end of apartheid. We stand at a critical juncture and the course that we take in the next five years will determine whether our country consolidates its constitutional democracy or slips into stagnation and decline. But it is not load shedding, or even State Capture, that we should be most concerned about. What should keep us awake instead is rising anger at racial injustice after more than two decades of freedom.

OPINIONISTA: Cyril Ramaphosa’s clean-up campaign is well under way, and he deserves your voteOPINIONISTA: Cyril Ramaphosa’s clean-up campaign is well under way, and he deserves your voteThe naysayers in opposition circles say that voting for President Cyril Ramaphosa in the upcoming elections is just entrenching a corrupt ANC in power. But that ignores the huge advances the president has already made in dismantling the networks of State Capture set in place by his predecessor, Jacob Zuma.

OPINIONISTA: ANC’s housing record as flimsy as Ramaphosa’s million units promiseOPINIONISTA: ANC’s housing record as flimsy as Ramaphosa’s million units promiseThe DA doesn’t confront the housing problem by making disingenuous arguments as the ANC’s Lionel Adendorf does, or by making unrealistic populist promises of a million houses in a single community as President Cyril Ramaphosa did in Alexandra last week.

OPINIONISTA: Mind your own business: Promoters are people too, you knowOPINIONISTA: Mind your own business: Promoters are people too, you knowJust about every time we go to the supermarket, we’re (slightly uncomfortably) aware of the promoters with their little stalls offering everything from sausages on a stick to a dab of cheap perfume. Mostly, they are hired professionals who are just doing a job: but sometimes, they are the real deal – a small business trying to promote their very own product.

OPINIONISTA: We need to talk about Joburg’s rising tide of filthOPINIONISTA: We need to talk about Joburg’s rising tide of filthWhile the DA and Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba are quick to blame the ills of the city of Johannesburg on misrule by the previous ANC regime, much of it can actually be laid at the door of Mashaba himself. His executive, top-down style of rule and the DA’s fragile coalition with the EFF make for a city that is increasingly ungovernable.

OPINIONISTA: Gangster State: Calls for journalists to report corruption to the police are a deflection and based on misconception of the lawOPINIONISTA: Gangster State: Calls for journalists to report corruption to the police are a deflection and based on misconception of the lawAs often happens when journalists report on alleged corruption, some detractors of Pieter-Louis Myburgh’s book, Gangster State: Unravelling Ace Magashule’s Web of Capture, complained that Myburgh should have reported the alleged corruption to the police instead of doing his job and writing a book about it. Some have even argued that Myburgh (or at least his editor) has a legal duty to report the alleged corruption to the police. Such claims attempt to draw attention from the real issue — the alleged corruption of Ace Magashule and his network of collaborators — and are based on a misconception of the law.
