Opinion: Why this newspaper fan still has hope for the future of journalism [Opinion]

And what I said years ago is what I still believe today. The medium is not what matters most. “Paper” is not the important part of “newspaper.”

The editors, reporters, photographers, data specialists, audience engagement experts, columnists and graphic artists, the newsmakers who serve as focal points of our coverage, and the readers who support our work and make it stronger with their feedback, are all part of what make the news business more than a business. They comprise a community.

That so many journalism students are just as excited about joining and championing that community today as I was at their age gives me hope this much-needed profession, the Fourth Estate of our democracy, will survive whatever the future throws at it.
