Opinion: Why exactly does SANDAG need Downtown high-rise office space? [Opinion]

The U-T reported, “San Diego’s lead transportation agency is on the hunt for a new headquarters to accommodate its 400 staffers and is considering some of the newest — and nicest — properties in the downtown market.” Why Downtown? Why not at a housing transit hub? Why require employee commutes?

Typically the transportation agency is making life very good for its own government bureaucrats rather than carrying out its mass transit congestion relief with its own 400 employees. Instead of seeking economical office space where SANDAG employees live, the bosses apparently want fancy ocean-view offices with employee parking benefits.

SANDAG’s plan for us is to take mass transit or to walk to work for congestion relief. But for itself, it’s suburban private car commutes to upscale offices. Typically it’s do as we say, not do as we lead. Why be smart with the taxpayers’ — other people’s — money?
