Many people and families want to volunteer. The question often becomes how. The University of San Diego’s Caster Family Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Research identified several barriers to volunteering in a 2013 report,. And while almost 10 years have passed, the questions remain.
One of the advantages of volunteering through HandsOn San Diego is that you can try out volunteer experiences and causes that interest you, without a long-term commitment. Donna Weisshaupt first volunteered to help out at The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Festival of Books in late August. She thought it would be fun, and it was close to her house so she volunteered to be an author escort.
