Fifty years after its first staging, The San Diego Crew Classic — considered the premier spring rowing regatta in the United States — begins Friday. A few years after graduating from UCSD, DeVries founded his company with $5,000, working out of his home’s second bedroom in Orange County with the goal of moving back to San Diego.

As the innovative founder of American Specialty Health, DeVries started a company that now provides more than 57 million Americans — or about one in six — with health management practices that include alternative medicine, fitness programs and healthy lifestyle maintenance.
