Opinion: The SDSU Aztecs basketball team has risen from the Mountain West to the mountaintop [Opinion]
The genuineness of the joy that can be generated by competitive sports is infectious, especially in an era in which posturing and discord are pervasive.
The magic of the moment last Saturday — when San Diego State guard Lamont Butler drilled a 17-foot-jumper at the buzzer to give the Aztecs an over Florida Atlantic and send them to the NCAA men’s championship basketball game — will live forever with all the championship-starved San Diegans who saw the game.While SDSU fell short against a dominant Connecticut team in Monday’s final in Houston, coach Brian Dutcher, his staff and his players won the admiration of fans nationwide for their intensity, unity, resolve, defense and repeated second-half comebacks. The public celebration of their accomplishments beginning at 6 p.m.
By climbing to where no team from the lightly regarded Mountain West Conference had been — to the finals, as 363 teams across college basketball dreamed this year — the Aztecs have fueled high expectations for future success.
