Opinion: The San Diego area is way behind on building EV chargers. This federal program could help. [Opinion]
the average Level 2 project costs $8,700-$10,000, and direct current fast chargers cost $104,000-$125,000. Given that the need is great, the region should take advantage of this once-in-a-decade investment by the federal government and put together a regional application for charger funding.
The region should take advantage of this funding opportunity. Here are a couple of recommendations I propose: First, the group’s key members should formalize their coordination via a memorandum of understanding. Second, the leading collaboration members should form a Joint Powers Authority to accept funding from federal, local and private dollars.
This funding will be used to look at a creative model to bring electric vehicle infrastructure to where it is needed. For example, the city of San Diego recently released a request for proposals for a private vendor to install 400 new EV charging stations on city-owned lots. Ideas such as these are needed for the region to fill in the gaps.
