Opinion: The Colorado Springs shooting should inspire San Diego's sheriff-elect to reevaluate GVROs [Opinion]
is a retired commander in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and a former candidate for sheriff and lives in La Mesa.And their hate-spawned killings at an LGBTQ+ club in Colorado Springs, Colo., exposed a fundamental flaw in how law enforcement applies or doesn’t apply gun safety laws.
The alleged shooter’s past and the state of Colorado’s lax approach to gun safety laws make what prosecutors have charged as “bias-motivated crimes with bodily injury” so much sadder. Colorado has laws designed to stop violent people from possessing and or purchasing firearms, laws known as “red flag laws” that include gun violence restraining orders. They don’t seem to have worked in this case.
Law enforcement has discretion to initiate the gun violence restraining order process, which can end with removing firearms from people deemed to be dangerous. It’s a process that is now used inThe alleged killer at Club Q had previously been arrested in Colorado Springs by the local Sheriff’s Department for allegedly threatening relatives with a homemade bomb, multiple weapons and ammunition,. A video of his threats was broadcast on Facebook live in 2021.
After 35 years in law enforcement, mostly with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, I believe the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department had a public safety obligation after the previous arrest to take all steps necessary to ensure the public’s safety — and it fell short. The department didn’t initiate any provisions within its red-flag gun safety laws because the
