Opinion: San Diego's longest serving city clerk is an Arab American man. Here's his story. [Opinion]
As we celebrate Arab American Heritage Month in San Diego, it’s essential to highlight the contributions Arab Americans have made to our local community. Charles “Chuck” Abdelnour is a name many recognize, but most are oblivious to his heritage. His last name, Abdelnour, is Arabic for the disciple of the light, where light means God.
“My father voted for the first time in his life when he became a U.S. citizen,” Chuck told me. “He instilled in me the value of this civic duty. As a city clerk, I wanted to do all I could to offer San Diegans the same opportunity.”Brawley became home for the young Lebanese immigrant couple who would become Chuck’s parents, Gabriel and Mary Abdelnour, following the Great Depression in the early 1930s.
Much as the mass starvation of World War I resulted in the death of more than 200,000 people, today Lebanon teeters at the precipice of economic collapse. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia saysChuck is more fond of talking about his parents and their struggle to provide him and his siblings with a decent life than about discussing himself.
