Opinion: San Diego must take back its downtown before it's too late [Opinion]

I write this letter to ask, “Why?” Why are transients allowed to set up tents on public sidewalks in the Gaslamp Quarter without legal consequences? Why are transients allowed to blatantly smoke meth and crack in public without fear of law enforcement or intervention?

I come to this city many times per year with my wife to enjoy the nightlife. But even as a law enforcement officer from another city, I don’t feel safe walking down the street with my wife without being armed, day or night. The streets and sidewalks are sprayed with human urine and feces. The smell is absolutely unbearable.

We all deserve better. The politicians responsible for this area need to do better. The San Diego Police Department owes it to the citizens here to do its best to clean up the Downtown area.Eastvale, Riverside CountyOn Monday night, we met a friend from New York for dinner near Horton Plaza and then walked to the Omni Hotel. We have lived in San Diego for over 22 years and, pre-pandemic, went Downtown for Padres games or a night out on a regular basis.

That enjoyment and opportunity is over! I would welcome any elected official to take that walk across Broadway and down 5th Avenue to L Street, or maybe “hell” would be a better description. The highlights for us were being accosted by drunks, sharing the third-party smoke from two people who looked like they were smoking crack out of a small pipe, and gazing down an alley to see a fellow half-naked with a bottle rolling in the street. These were just the highlights.
