Opinion: San Diegans weigh in on what Balboa Park needs most, Part II [Opinion]
All essays last week were thoughtful. I agreed especially with those wanting to go native, regarding plants, and take care of trees. The buildings, whose facades date as far back as the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, are treasures to be cared for and also preserved. The electric wicker carts featured during the 2015 100th celebration should be permanently available.
The governance issue could be tackled, starting with the simple creation of a Balboa Park Department with its own budget and management. The toothless Balboa Park Committee also needs rethinking. New and outspoken leadership would be a good place to start, along with a focus on professional design review.
5. Replace the parking lot south of the Spreckels Organ Pavilion with a multi-story parking garage to help offset the hundreds of spaces recently lost along Park Boulevard. In 2019, I photographed the deplorable state of the bathroom facing the Spreckels Organ Pavilion and the one adjacent to the Alcazar Garden parking lot. I then downloaded the images to a disk and mailed it to Mayor Kevin Faulconer. Enclosed was my plea to renovate the bathrooms or at least improve the lighting and cleanliness.
No more commercial takeovers such as with Comic-Con. Improve bike security and consider the possibility of bike lockers. Reinstall the bike rack outside Panama 66. I propose a change to access the park by building a 1.9-mile trolley extension from Park Boulevard and B Street to Park Boulevard and Morley Field Drive. This would be a dedicated two-trolley car line on the south side of Park Boulevard, which goes from point A to point B, and then right back to point A for all operating hours, and then rolls back to a service yard at night. The 11-mile extension of the trolley to University City bore a cost of $200 million per mile.
