Events leading up to Suzanne Simpson's disappearance shine a light on the urgent need to speak out against domestic violence.

The Express-News Editorial Board recently called on our community to take action in light of San Antonio resident Suzanne Simpson ’s disappearance from our city, from her family, from her community. In my 44 years of working in this community to help more effectively address domestic violence, I have had the honor and the privilege of guiding many women onto a journey of escape, liberation and healing.

Bexar County officials address rising rate of domestic violence homicides The scourge of domestic violence has the potential to destroy people’s lives. I say potential because I know thousands of women, despite numerous barriers and obstacles, who have been able to successfully get away, get grounded and begin new lives. Those barriers are often systemic, economic, emotional, psychological and physical. It’s a terrifying situation.

A neighbor heard screams. Then San Antonio real estate agent Suzanne Simpson disappeared. Even with help, however, sexist attitudes, victim blaming and judgmental perspectives often hinder a victim’s capacity to flee. Most of us do not know what it’s like to live under the control of an aggressor. It’s understandable to ask, “Why do they stay?” The reasons are too many to list. During the act of leaving, however, is when the victim is the most vulnerable.
