June is Men’s Mental Health Month, a time to, among other things, help raise awareness around common issues that men face when it comes to their mental health. One of the big ones most people find surprising is pWhile the focus of postpartum depression is mainly on women , men transitioning to fatherhood often suffer from perinatal depression and anxiety.

It’s easy to understand why men often become depressed in early fatherhood. They commonly feel invisible, unimportant and inept as they try to figure out how they fit into the care routine of their new baby . Both parents are losing sleep, and their relationship is different, which has huge implications for each parent’s mental health. Their worlds have been rocked, and society tells them they should be loving every minute.

As a society, we need to do better. We should buck the stereotype that men can only be tough, are unfazed by major lifestyle changes and are fine with being less involved with their baby than their partner is. Taking care of their mental health is about the manliest thing a guy can do, and it’s part of being a great father.
