Opinion: Navy dolphins never asked to join the U.S. military [Opinion]
” : I was interested to read the story regarding aging dolphins maintained by the Navy in San Diego, having been a longtime vocal opponent of the program.
Predictably the article pointed to valuable medical information that “could” help dolphins in the wild and “maybe even humans,” as unlikely as both are. Only a nod was given to the fact these animals never volunteered to be used as weapons of war or geriatric research subjects, and have spent most of their lives in small sea pens.
Veterinary health researcher Stephanie Venn-Watson said that when the program is phased out, the world may never see a collection of animals quite like it.“There’s just no population like it in the world, and it will not happen again,” she opined. To which I say, “Good!” For there never should have been a collection like it in the first place.
