Opinion: Meet the top candidates in California's state Assembly District 80 special election [Opinion]
interviewed two top candidates running to fill a vacancy in a special election for state Assembly District 80, which includes National City, Chula Vista and parts of San Diego south of state route 94. David Alvarez, a former San Diego City Council member, and Georgette Gómez, a former San Diego City Council president, are running to fill the remainder through December of the seat left vacant by Lorena Gonzalez’s departure in January. Both are Democrats, as is Gonzalez.
The editorial board did not interview Republican Lincoln Pickard, a third candidate in the race. He ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 2016, 2018 and 2020 before running again this year. You can read his answers to ais April 5 and early voting begins next week. Separately, there is a primary election in June and a general election in November for a four-year term in the district that would start in December.
Each interview is about an hour long, and covers subjects such as the state’s COVID-19 response, the climate emergency, housing, homelessness, education, transit and law enforcement. We appreciate the candidates spending some time with us, and voters in the district spending time learning about the candidates.
