VOICES | Listen to Tito Mboweni; he really wants out | He is not being a nuisance, he really means it. And at some point in the near future we will all have to come to terms with the reality that he really wants his farewell, writes Setumo Stone

Mboweni has long given signals that he wants to call it a day, but we have not been listening. He is a market favourite and President Cyril Ramaphosa needs him to maintain some economic stability, so he is not listening either.

“There is no possibility that I will ever become president of the republic of South Africa, so there is nobody who can put any political pressure on me because I do not care. I just have to do the correct thing,” he said in a recent interview. Not so long ago, I was a free man, no political constraints. Then I agreed, voluntarily to join Government. Tjoooo! Free but not free!! You have to obey the majority/collective decisions! Sometimes it feels like swallowing a rock!??Given our recent past, a National Treasury that is not pliant and subject to the president’s whims is a welcome relief. Mboweni represents an independent Treasury that does not take kindly to being bullied.

Mboweni is indeed frustrated and he finds it difficult sometimes to hide it, even to maintain decorum.
