Voting is just beginning in the effort to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Mail-in ballots are being sent to registered voters this week, and Californians have until September 14 to cast their votes. Despite being a heavily Democratic state where Newsom won with 62% of the vote two years ago, the outcome of the election is not a foregone conclusion -- and it could have massive repercussions, not just for Newsom or California, but indeed the whole country.
Lincoln MitchellIn this election, Californians are presented with two questions. The first -- a simple yes or no on whether Newsom should be recalled. The second question gives voters the opportunity to choose from over 40 candidates to replace Newsom -- or they can write in a name not listed. The election is based on a simple plurality, making it possible for Newsom's successor to be chosen by a relatively small proportion of the electorate.
