Opinion: Why did Virginia Governor Ralph Northam veto two very good bills?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 4 women will experience violence from an intimate partner at some point in her life. The toll it takes on women and their children is brutal. Lives are shattered. Children gain scars that never heal. Abusers often intimidate their partners into staying in these terrible circumstances. Without some sort of outside help, it can be all but impossible to escape.

The governor could have visited any of the dozens of shelters for abused women in our commonwealth. I have no doubt that he would hear the same story at all of them — 60 days can make a world of difference. It can save lives.
