Opinion | 'The single most important question Denver’s 25 mayoral candidates must address is: what will you do differently to address Denver’s homelessness and housing affordability crisis?'

In their book, “Homelessness is a Housing Problem,” University of Washington professor Greg Colburn and data scientist Clayton Page Aldern set out to explain the substantial variation in per capita homeless rates in major cities across the United States. That being said, individual choices and people with a variety of health and economic vulnerabilities certainly contribute, and candidates must thoughtfully address that. The opioid crisis and deadly amounts of fentanyl have also played a role in nearly doubling the number of people living on the streets.
Denver is pointed in the right direction. Mayor Michael Hancock’s administration has fostered a housing-with-services approach to homelessness. Denver’s strategic investments include building emergency and permanent housing stock while also addressing the inflow and outflow of vulnerable people to mitigate against this risk.
The next administration will be forced to allocate scarce resources amongst competing interests, made even more challenging as a broken federal immigration system is sending thousands more unhoused people to Denver.
