Opinion: I moved 2,500 miles away from my mom for college. In some ways, it's brought us closer. [Opinion]
Just a few days ago, a friend offered me some of his salad with a blue cheese dressing. With a look of disgust, I responded that I detested blue cheese before pondering on the fact that I really hadn’t tried it before. It was something my mother didn’t like, so I assumed I didn’t, either. Earlier, I was in a conversation and messed up a classic euphemism: “Play it by year” instead of “Play it by ear.” Again, it had my mother’s name written all over it.
As I finish my semester and prepare to come home, I realize that it took me not having my mother by my side this past year to see how lucky I am. Throughout my life, my mother has created an environment where I feel loved, valued and prepared to live my life to my fullest potential. I am a product of the incredible and strong-willed woman that my mother is.
To all the mothers out there with college-aged kids, keep calling your kids even if they don’t call you. As college became more difficult, the simple notion of my mother calling and reminding me she cared meant the world to me. Eventually, the tides turned, and I started to call my mother independently.
