San Diego County faces a significant challenge when it comes to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs: a shortage of talent and a workforce that doesn’t represent the population. Ac…

Sept. 10, 2022 San Diego, CA Academy of Our Lady of Peace students participated in the school’s second annual hackathon, an opportunity for girls in 8th through 12th grades to get together and dream up ways to address global issues using science, technology, engineering and math. This year, the issue is “life on Mars.” Students were divided into groups with diverse topics such as clothing, transportation, waste, energy, etc. Approximately 50 students attended the on campus event.

STEM programs foster critical thinking skills in students, provide opportunities for high-paying careers and promote innovation. Undoubtedly, many of the world’s most pressing issues, such as sustainability and cybersecurity, require STEM solutions, and educating students in these fields prepares them to address these challenges. Additionally, STEM jobs offer a realistic way to earn a living wage in a region with one of the highest costs of living in the nation.

However, students from low-income backgrounds often face significant financial barriers that make it difficult to accept unpaid internships. They need paid jobs to cover essential expenses like rent and groceries, leaving little room for unpaid opportunities that could enhance their career prospects.

To bridge these gaps, we must urge elected leaders to increase funding for under-resourced schools in San Diego County. We must also provide students opportunities to connect with local STEM businesses and professionals for education, exposure, mentorship, internships and real-world experiences.
