Opinion: Here's how corporate 'rainbow-washing' during Pride hurts the LGBTQ community [Opinion]
I remember swelling with joy years ago when I first saw Pride-themed merchandise as it signaled to me that my existence was worth celebrating, not hiding. That there might be a world where I am safe to be myself. That the Pride merchandise was just as commonplace as the sitcom-themed shirts and sports-themed merchandise next to it. And in that respect, I celebrated the visibility and welcomed the corporate nod to my community.
It didn’t take long before I began to read articles on how the businesses that seemingly celebrated and welcomed the LGBTQ community through their Pride-themed offerings might not be the bastions of inclusivity I thought them to be. Initially, this fact didn’t perturb me as I fully expect for-profit companies to behave in ways that benefit their bottom line regardless of what contradictory actions they take.
