Opinion: Hateful remarks from county Human Relations Commission members shouldn't be tolerated [Opinion]
” : This is interesting in light of the mission of the commission. The website states: “The Leon L. Williams San Diego County Human Relations Commission, was created by County supervisors to help reduce discrimination and intolerance.”
Are the members really clear on the duties for which they were appointed? How can one be a member when they espouse hate and intolerance? If the commission is to truly serve as a voice “to help reduce discrimination and intolerance,” then all its members must meet these criteria. If they don’t, if the commission is merely for show, then it simply serves as a waste of taxpayer monies and time.
But, if it is to have value, its membership must be vetted, under oath, to maintain and adhere to the principles for which the commission was formed.Membership designations also reflect on those recommending potential commissioners. Their values may come into question. If we are trying to make things “better,” then we must ensure that we have the people who will make things better.Re: “Be Better, Human Relations Commission” : When Leon Williams was a member of the County Board of Supervisors, I came to know him well on a personal level. He is an incredible human being who, in my experience, always shows deep respect for others, with whom he agrees and disagrees.
There are many reasons for us to disagree with each other. And those disagreements can be strong ones. But members of a human relations commission should be selected based on a fundamental interest in finding common ground among all of our citizens and a focus on promoting human dignity.Be best, Human Relations Commission.
