Opinion: San Diego Police Department and Sheriff's Department both need to fill surge in vacancies [Opinion]

The inability of the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to recruit new officers as fast as they are losing them is a development that demands attention and action.

After three fiscal years in which substantial pay hikes brought in more new hires than departures, SDPD is on pace to see more than 250 people quit this fiscal year — far more than in recent years. Barring an unexpected surge in new hires, the fiscal year will end with SDPD more than 100 officers short of the 2,036 positions for which funds are available.

The Sheriff’s Department lost 457 deputies in the previous two fiscal years while hiring 355. This fiscal year, it so far has more new hires than departures. But this month alone, it expects 97 retirements.

Shifting responses to some mental health calls away from law enforcement may limit staffing woes. But with law enforcement retention issues and rising crime nationwide, the city and county have to consider improving compensation and recruitment efforts. It’s a simple case of supply and demand.
