San Diego is uniquely positioned at the intersection of cultures, histories and traditions. A compelling example of this interconnectedness is the traveling exhibition, which highlights a little-known chapter of our shared history that reminds us of the historical unity of our region. After starting at in El Truinfo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, the exhibition is now on display at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park through May 2025.
The vaquero tradition is deeply rooted in the landscapes of Mexico, Baja California and Alta California. Vaqueros have been the caretakers of the land, practicing a tradition of stewardship rooted in respect for nature and sustainability. When Joaquin Armas and his fellow vaqueros were invited to Hawaii, they brought this ethos with them. Their techniques and values helped Hawaiians manage the overgrown cattle and develop the paniolo tradition.
As the exhibition travels to Texas and ultimately to Hawaii, it will carry a message of unity and shared history to new audiences. Its final home in Hawaii will complete the circle, reconnecting the paniolo tradition to its roots and honoring the enduring legacy of the vaqueros. In a time when borders often dominate the conversation, reminds us that our histories and futures are intertwined.
