From WSJopinion: In this week’s Future View, students debate proposals in New York and elsewhere to eliminate gifted-and-talented programs
to submit opinions of fewer than 250 words before May 18. The best responses will be published that night.Being in a gifted-and-talented program was a curse. Expectations from instructors were high—anything less than perfection would warrant expulsion from the program.
Soon academic failure deemed me unworthy of this advanced education. Overlooked was the social context that primed me to struggle. Extreme poverty and hazardous living conditions brought stress; I had to disregard my education to find a safe place to live. Rather than investigate the causes of my unusual academic decline, teachers labeled me another lazy student. I was dropped from the gifted program.
