Opinion: EBT fraud plaguing 5,000 San Diego County residents needs a swift California response [Opinion]

for pandemic relief funds from prison inmates or being unable to protect benefits that poor families rely on to avoid going hungry, the ham-handedness of the Golden State’s government agencies is in striking contrast with California’s emergence as the tech capital of the world decades ago.

Officials with the state and county agencies involved in the distribution of the benefits say they are doing what they can to reduce the shocking moments facing hapless people who try to use their debit cards for urgent needs and are turned away by store clerks, and multiple criminal probes are reportedly under way.

With some 388,000 county residents receiving these government benefits, there’s a chance this problem could be far worse, dwarfing the fraud that’s already been reported. Maybe this will have the effect of grabbing Gov. Gavin Newsom’s attention — and making him realize that his list of state problems in need of solving just got longer.
