Researchers studied how 25 companies across four African countries responded to the Covid-19 pandemic and found it could either strengthen or restrict companies' sustainability efforts. | News24_Business

. This allows us to systematically compare our case study companies using both qualitative and quantitative data.

But we also found some companies adopted a strengthening approach even though they did not have a mature sustainability strategy. They were motivated by a lack of governance stability and effectiveness in their national context. This was worsened by the crisis. We called this"governance gap-filling".

Finally,"bunkering down" explains how some companies restricted their sustainability efforts because they saw in the crisis an increase in unpredictability in their operating context.
