Opinion: Broken wage theft system shows Sacramento still should be known as dysfunction junction [Opinion]
Workers who present evidence that their employers have wrongly withheld pay must, on average, wait 780 days to have their cases heard. Yet per state law, the maximum wait is supposed to be 120 days. These delays have gone on for many years and cannot be blamed on the pandemic or other recent factors.What’s instructive about this example is that it deals with how workers are treated — nominally an important value in a progressive, pro-union state.
Glazer thinks an audit is in order. But what’s really needed is a powerful sense of resolve — from the governor’s office on down — that accepting mediocrity from so many agencies is no longer acceptable. The “it’s good enough for government work” cliche should not be the state motto.
