Opinion: Balboa Park street vendors should go elsewhere [Opinion]
I have lived in San Diego for 30-plus years, and the other day I went to the Japanese Friendship Garden to enjoy the beautiful flowering trees. I had not been there long when I walked down the main promenade of the park and was appalled to see so many vendors not only selling various trinkets but also cooking food.
The vision and odors reminded me of the yearly county fair, which has its place for these things. But these vendors are ruining the beauty of this park, and I don’t understand why the city of San Diego allows such destruction. If this continues, this park will be completely run down soon, and the “bloom will be off the rose,” so to speak. I am begging the city to review these conditions and halt all the depreciating activities so we can reclaim the park’s beauty.Although my husband and I swore off Balboa Park excursions on weekends due to the horrific traffic and parking conditions, we felt obliged to attend Saturday evening’s fundraiser concert.
Where is the control over this mess? We understand the need to earn a livelihood, but can’t we designate just one place in the park as a commercial plaza and keep the vendors from destroying the walkways, lawns and ambiance of our beautiful park?Leslie Johnson Leech
