Opinion: As SANDAG chair, here's how I think San Diego County's transportation plans center equity [Opinion]
chairs the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and the SANDAG board of directors and lives in Chula Vista.Although I grew up on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border and identify as a fronteriza, I was well aware of the invisible social divide that led me to the path I am on today. The San Diego region is a special place. Our county shares a border with Mexico and is in close proximity to more than 18 sovereign tribal nations.
Every four years, SANDAG is responsible for updating its regional transportation plan, a blueprint that looks three decades into the future. Since his arrival in December 2018, SANDAG CEO Hasan Ikhrata has revolutionized this process. For the first time in history, a lot of people are talking about the regional plan, and whether you agree with SANDAG’s vision or not, we can’t deny that SANDAG has prioritized mobility options and put equity at the forefront.
This program has been so successful that we celebrated 5 million youth riders using the Youth Opportunity Passes in San Diego County as of last month. That means these passes eliminated the unique mobility challenges and financial burden youth face getting to school, jobs and other early-career opportunities.
I’m also committed to ensuring that everyone in our community feels seen and heard. When residents shared their concerns about the potential road user charge, it was removed from the regional plan. We understand that current economic conditions have hit working families and small businesses hard, and this isn’t the right time for this pilot program in San Diego County.
