,” : I’m not entirely sure how Chris Tomlinson does it but he has once again managed to take a page from Leonard Pitts’ playbook and turned a thoughtful piece of commentary into what ends up reading like a screed from a scorned lover. I was thinking he would connect some dots about the imbalance of Abbott’s busing program dollars coming out of taxpayers’ pockets versus immigration’s cost and benefits to our systems — you know, “follow the money” — but he was far more “clever” than that.
I don’t get it. One day Tomlinson advocates for increased minimum wages for low-skilled workers, and the next he’s stumping for suppressed pay for desperate but deserving people. And even then he can’t stop. In a Festivus-like airing of grievances in which Abbott failed he goes on listing everything from the grid, to law enforcement to abortion, to pot. Even COVID-19 seems to have been Abbott’s fault.
C’mon, man! If this is the kind of “critical thinking” the Chronicle thinks readers don’t see through as anything more than an aptly timed political attack ad disguised as journalism, then you don’t think much of your audience, Houston citizens and frankly yourselves. It used to be that newspapers were required to run the word “advertisement” above advertorials. Times have changed.
