The ADN has a new opinion editor.
Starting this week, ADN has a new full-time opinion editor. Gary Black is joining us from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, where he was managing editor for the past five years. He was with the newspaper for 19 years overall.
, left last December for a job back in his hometown of Fairbanks. I’ve been covering the job since then, initially while also being the overall editor of the ADN. Ifrom that role in March, but I have continued to wrangle opinion content over the past months — editing pieces, curating content, working with writers, soliciting reader-based content, and interacting with readers — while we worked to fill the position. I’ve enjoyed it hugely, especially the regular interactions with readers, but the intention was never for me to be in this role for the long haul. Gary was responsible for the opinion content in the News-Miner for the past five years. He knows Alaska, he knows Alaska issues and he knows the value of having robust forums for public opinions in Alaska life. I’ll assist in the transition over the next few weeks. ADN has always been committed to providing a robust platform for opinions on state, local and national/international issues. That continues, and it’s as important as ever right now. We’ve published more than 1,000 local opinion columns and letters to the editor so far this year, along with hundreds more from national writers. We publish fresh opinion content every day at adn.com.David Hulen retired as editor of the ADN in March 2025 after a decade in that role. He is currently serving as interim opinion editor. He was a reporter and editor at ADN starting in 1986. As a reporter, he traveled throughout Alaska, and previously was city editor, news editor and managing editor before being named editor in 2015.UN chief warns world leaders of ‘an age of reckless disruption and relentless human suffering’ Murkowski pushes to include funding for health care, public broadcasting in deal to avert government shutdown
