Branch Brook Park's collection of 5,000 cherry blossoms, the pride of the Essex County park system, is said to the be largest in North America.

The free festival, which will last through April 10, is timed to showcase what is said to be largest collection of cherry blossom trees in North America, a gem of the Essex County park system that includes a variety of species blooming in March and April in colors ranging from a light pink to deep fuchsia.— the pride of County Executive Joe DiVincenzo — outnumber the 3,750 that decorate the monument region of Washington, D.C.

Families, young lovers, and admirers of all kinds picnicked and strolled the park’s byways beneath the pinkish boughs, snapping selfies and group photos, with the sun warming the air and heightening the brilliance of the blossoms. Cyclists, too, enjoyed the sunshine and blossoms. Once again, the festival corresponded with the annual Cherry Blossom Challenge, an annual day of bike racing around the park’s northern loop road that draws competitive amateurs from up and down the East Coast. Josh Lipka of Pittstown, Massachusetts, won Saturday’s main event, coasting to victory after a solo breakaway. For those who race on two feet, the Cherry Blossom 10K Run is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m.

Cyclists competed Saturday in the annual Cherry Blossom Challenge at Branch Brook Park, on the first day of the Cherry Blossom Festival, April 2-10.
