S. history. SAN ANTONIO — Opening arguments are underway in the federal trial of two men arrested in connection to what is believed to be the deadliest human smuggling case in modern U.S. history. The criminal trial for two men charged in connection with the deadliest human smuggling attempt in U.S. History is getting underway Tuesday morning. Federal prosecutors say 53 people, including 6 children, were basically cooked to death in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer that was discovered on Quintana Road back in 2022. Felipe Orduna-Torres and Armando Gonzales-Ortega are accused of taking part in what federal prosecutors called a sophisticated international human smuggling operation Our cameras aren’t allowed in federal court, but jurors heard from Roberto Quintero, an employee of a nearby paving company, who was flagged down by one of the survivors of the smuggling attempt. He testified that the young survivor was sitting in the middle of the road, hysterically screaming for help. One SAPD officer who first responded to the scene testified that the victims were covered in seasoning to mask their smell. His body worn camera video from that day played in court, showing first responders removing numerous bodies from the trailer.Other defendants, including Homero Zamorano, the driver of the trailer, have taken plea deals. Zamorano will be sentenced next month.
