But no great mission comes without its set of trials and tribulations. Since then, the organization has turned itself on its head and bears almost no resemblance to the nascent entity it was nine years ago.One of the biggest changes is that of the original six founders, only two are actively involved with the company today. The revolving door at OpenAI’s leadership has spun faster than a hamster on a wheel.
Because the reasons behind Altman’s removal remained murky, and the board did not provide a clear explanation for their decision at the time, except for saying that Altman wasn’t open in his communication with the board, people started to question the company’s intentions and whether it could achieve the mission it had set out to accomplish in the first place—AI safety.
Rolled out in late 2022, ChatGPT, as you know, changed everything. Textbooks? Outdated. Google? Redundant. In an instant, ChatGPT became one of the fastest-growing applications in human history, boasting over 200 million weekly users. But that’s unlikely to happen. The name may have ‘Open’ in it, but OpenAI has yet to release an open-sourced model since GPT-2 in 2019. In fact, the company has done many of the things it said it wouldn’t, like steering clear of commercial product development and for-profit partnerships.But what of the future?
