OpenAI is partnering with Los Alamos National Laboratory, which conducts research in fields including national security, space exploration, renewable energy and medicine.
LANL was founded in 1943 with a single goal in mind, to design and build the world’s first atomic bomb. For nearly 50 years, the lab focused primarily on high-level military research but following the end of the Cold War in 1991 it shifted its focus to civilian research and development. The partnership’s mandate outlines tasks such as cell transformation, which involves introducing foreign genetic material into a host organism, cell culture, and cell separation.
