The DEP cited “significant public interest” in the open house for the postponement.

An open house on plans to revitalize Liberty State Park was abruptly postponed by the state Department of Environmental Protection , just two days before the public meeting was set to take place.

The DEP was expected to discuss plans for the park that include restoring the contaminated interior of the park, adding recreational amenities on Audrey Zapp Drive and revitalizing the historic train sheds into arts and craft space, and a “holistic” master plan for the waterfront and the southern end.that no major commercialization or privatization of the Hudson River waterfront park would take place, emphasizing that is “not a thing, period, full stop.

“The purpose of this letter to ensure that you are aware of the tremendous effort that the task force has put in to establishing an appropriate design concept for Liberty State Park,” wrote Webster. “The task force, which never took a vote of any kind and had no consensus against the DEP’s nature restoration plans or for Fireman’s commercial venues plans, had the basic mandate of looking at those surveys and making recommendations about types and locations of free active recreation amenities for the approved 61 acres of free active recreation,” he said.

Jersey City Councilman Frank Gilmore, who represents the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood, says the DEP provided “a sufficient amount of notice” for the open house.the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority was initially worded that the new NJSEA would have decision-making power over the park’s future.

In July, Murphy signed the Liberty State Park Conservation, Recreation, and Community Inclusion Act, which directed $50 million into investments in the park.
