Opel-Vauxhall is reevaluating its electric vehicle (EV) transition timeline, originally set for full electrification by 2028. The company acknowledges the disparity between its initial projections and the current reality of the European EV market. While remaining committed to a fully electric future, Opel-Vauxhall is adopting a more flexible approach, offering a range of powertrain options to meet evolving customer demands.

Opel-Vauxhall is revising its ambitious plan to become fully electric by 2028, acknowledging the stark reality of the European electric vehicle (EV) market. The company, which boldly announced in 2022 its intention to launch its last internal combustion engine (ICE) car in 2024, has now adopted a more flexible approach to powertrains.

CEO Florian Huettl, speaking at the Brussels motor show, confessed that the current situation differs significantly from the predictions made a few years ago by the company, the European Union, and other stakeholders. He emphasized that Opel-Vauxhall is already fully electrified, pointing to the Frontera crossover, available for less than £24,000 with both petrol and electric options, and the Grandland SUV boasting up to 435 miles of range. These offerings, according to Huettl, are significant steps towards popularizing EVs. While he stopped short of announcing a new timeline for phasing out ICE vehicles, he reaffirmed Opel's commitment to becoming fully electric in the long run. He stressed that the company currently enjoys the advantage of a multi-energy strategy, allowing customers to choose between different powertrain options.Huettl highlighted that Opel-Vauxhall's parent company, Stellantis, already met the UK's zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate before the launch of the Frontera and Grandland. Vauxhall itself sold almost 80,000 cars in the UK in 2024, with 15,900 being battery-powered, representing nearly 20% of its sales. However, he acknowledged that the overall EV adoption rate in Europe remains at only 14%, heavily reliant on government support policies. He cited Germany's lagging EV market despite its large car market as an example of how susceptible the EV landscape is to policy changes.Huettl identified three crucial elements for accelerating EV adoption in Europe: a diverse and compelling range of EV products, robust charging infrastructure, and clear direction from governments. He emphasized Opel-Vauxhall's commitment to these principles, demonstrating its efforts through the wide variety of EVs in its lineup and its support for the installation of street-side chargers in the UK. He welcomed the UK government's ZEV mandate and the 2030 deadline for ending sales of new ICE cars as clear targets for the company to follow. He also recognized the importance of government support systems in making EVs accessible to a broader audience, emphasizing that these initiatives are crucial for driving the transition towards electrification.
