The department signaled its support for the 30x30 Initiative, which is dedicated to advancing 'the representation and experiences of women in all ranks of policing across the United States.'
Following the form of its cross-bay law enforcement partner, the Oakland Police Department announced on Thursday it will commit to recruiting and advancing women in its ranks. The department said in a statement that it will take part in the 30x30 Initiative, which is a collective of police leaders, researchers and professional organizations dedicated to advancing "the representation and experiences of women in all ranks of policing across the United States.
" The OPD's announcement follows about a week after the San Francisco Police Department signaled its support for the initiative, which the SFPD said will help law enforcement agencies develop strategies to address recruitment, hiring, retention, promotion and agency culture. According to the 30x30 Initiative, women make up only 12% of sworn officers and 3% of police leadership in the United States. Research indicates women officers use less force and less excessive force in the field, are named in fewer complaints and lawsuits, are seen by communities as being more honest and compassionate, make fewer discretionary arrests and see better outcomes for crime victims, especially in sexual assault cases, according to the initiative.
