The Nazis had planned to round up Denmark’s Jews on Rosh Hashana in 1943, but many of them received a warning and fled.

One of these helpers was a math teacher, Svend Otto Nielsen, who went by the name John when he joined the Danish resistance group Holger Danske. As my family made their way to the coast with the Nazis only hours behind them, he arranged for a fishing boat to carry them and other refugees across the body of water separating Denmark from Sweden. That trip would be one of hundreds the people of Denmark hastily arranged to evacuate more than 7,000 Danish Jews to safety.

Unfortunately, we are not done with the days of politicians who harness hate for political power and those who enable these tactics. In our country, political courage to push back on those who cleverly find ways to stoke hate is at a low,and the barbaric truths of slavery are being whitewashed. Demonizing immigrants, dehumanizing marginalized groups and delegitimizing institutions that are meant to treat all citizens equally are not new approaches.
