Governor Kay Ivey sat down with WSFA 12 News Anchor Mark Bullock to discuss her legislative priorities. The day after her State of the State Address, Ivey went into detail about the bills she hopes lawmakers will pass. She says her number one priority for this session is crime.
Because so many crimes are committed by young people, the governor also supports new legislation that would require enhanced state supervision of juveniles, even those whose offenses are considered non-violent. Governor Ivey is also proud of her record on education. During her State of the State speech, she touted new data that shows Alabama math and reading scores are no longer last in the nation. She gave partial credit the state’s new Literary Act and Numeracy Act, which require students to perform at or above grade level.
“Our goal is to provide a quality education to every child in every zip code,” she said. “So we’re not taking away any money, we’re just saying, ‘let’s use it better.’” Cell phone bans are already in effect in some school systems. The bill before the legislature would create a statewide ban. It would also require local systems to set appropriate internet usage policies for students.
