has been a runaway success. The first season of Disney+’s quirky comedy about a true crime podcast, starring Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, brought in three Golden Globe nominations and three SAG nods – and near-universal praise for its charming, lighthearted take on a crowded genre.
But I’ll admit it: I found those first 10 episodes a little too… perfect. It’s a slick production that can often feel more like a stage show than a TV series, leaning into the glam New York murder mystery aesthetic – all art deco architecture and turtleneck jumpers – that plagues far too many dinner parties these days.
But the first two episodes of series two may have won me over. “We’re getting the hang of this,” shouts Martin’s washed-up actor Charles as the trio set about solving their next murder. “Absolutely, you can tell it’s our second season,” responds Oliver .
During their police interview, it transpires that the cops don’t have the real murder weapon – a knife, still missing – and so can’t charge them with anything. Free, and with another mystery on their hands, there’s only one thing left for Charles, Oliver and Mabel to do: solve the murder, and make a podcast as they go.follows much the same formula as the first – neighbour is slain, Charles, Mabel and Oliver set about catching the killer.
That they’re not the only ones turning Bunny’s death into entertainment offers another layer of intrigue. Cinda Canning , a successful podcaster in the image of, is making her own audio series with the hypothesis that the trio are guilty. This time around, then, the goal is to not only solve the central murder but to clear their own names, too.
