We chat with OnlyMurdersintheBuilding co-creator & EP John Hoffman (johnnyhoffman) about the process of unraveling each season's mysteries and the dream of working with stars like Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep:
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT True crime enthusiasts have been gifted with another round of Only Murders in the Building, and season 3 has taken Manhattan's favorite podcasters to Broadway no less. The Hulu mystery comedy — which stars the unlikely but brilliant trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez — has amassed a devoted fanbase and received plenty of critical acclaim, garnering a total of 28 Emmy nominations and 3 wins so far.
Congratulations on your Emmy nominations for the second year in a row. This time the screenwriting nomination is for the finale of season 2, which has to make you feel you did a good job of wrapping up that mystery. Which it absolutely did. It feels like you guys have the same murder board, and you're pulling off all the different suspects that you can use and the clues that you have dropped. How do you keep track of everything that has happened to lead to what must be the inevitable conclusion? To make sure people online aren't like, "Hey, there's no way that could have happened?"
As you should. I am right there with you in support of the writers and actors who all work so hard to create wonderful shows like this one. One such actor is Adina as Poppy, and I know you mentioned creating the character for her. Are you ever, as a producer, at war with yourself when it comes to picking a killer? Because then they have to leave after that.
Getting the answer to the mystery of the original podcast was just mastermind thinking, big-brain behavior. You guys also seed the next season into the previous finale. At the end of “I Know Who Did It,” we have Oliver's lead actor just collapsing on stage. Did you guys already know the double fake-out that was going to happen in the premiere at that point or, is that just like, "Put a pin in it.
The fact that you have Meryl now, no one can be a dream now. Everyone's going to say, "Yes." It must be surreal to get to direct Meryl Streep and guide her through her arc. What is she teaching you? Speaking of collaboration, all three of your lead actors are also executive producers. How hands-on is that? What is that collaboration like, and where do they give input?
