A leading professor said conspiracy theories were ‘clearly’ influencing people’s decision to refuse a jab.

Those who believe face masks are bad for human health , do not stop the spread of coronavirus , or believe the government is using them as a form of control , were more likely to refuse a vaccine.

Other groups who responded no to getting a vaccine included those who say ‘too much fuss’ is being made about the pandemic , those who did not trust scientists as a result of the crisis , and those who believe the government was too slow to act . Nearly a fifth of respondents who said they were unlikely to get a vaccine got most of their coronavirus information from WhatsApp rather than official sources.Professor Bobby Duffy said belief in conspiracy theories were ‘clearly’ influencing people’s decision to refuse a jab.

He added: ‘While one in six in the UK say they are unlikely to, or definitely won’t, get a potential vaccine against Covid-19, this rises to around a third or more among certain groups, with a clear link to belief in conspiracy theories and mistrust of government, authority and science. ‘Vaccines are one of our greatest achievements, and there is a great deal of faith that we’ll eventually develop one for Covid-19 – but more still need to be convinced of how important it could be fore ending this crisis.’
