Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, the chief executive of Sassa, admitted that the allowance for just 10 applicants had been paid out
Various questions were this week posed in Parliament and elsewhere to try to find out how many of the people who qualify for the monthly allowance because they are unemployed and do not receive any grants had received the money.
In the meantime, the level of desperation among the millions of poverty-stricken people who have lost their jobs due to the lockdown is skyrocketing. People are also having to deal with increases in the cost of food. Memela-Khambula said that, within three days, 3.5 million people had applied. This grew to 4.9 million applicants.Only unemployed people who receive no other social benefits from the state qualify for the allowance. For this reason, applicants were first run through the Unemployment Insurance Fund’s database, Sassa’s list of 17 million beneficiaries and the SA Revenue Service’s database to ensure they were not employed or receiving state benefits.
The task team’s report was compiled by the country’s leading payment system experts, including commercial banks, the head of the Reserve Bank’s payment system department and Mastercard.
