Naperville needs an indoor facility for swimming, tennis, and pickleball, according to an online petition signed by more than 1,300 people.
” urges the Naperville Park District to build a “rec plex” to fill the “few major holes in available year-round facilities and programming.”“It’s been a need in the Naperville area since I was a kid growing up swimming here as a Mudrat at Centennial Beach,” said petition organizer Kelly Reif, a mother of three boys and coach of the Naperville North High School boys water polo team.
With more than 3,000 kids swimming and an additional 400 playing water polo, the city is home to the Naperville Swim Conference, the largest of its kind in the country, said Ruthy O’Malley, head coach of the Saybrook Sharks. Park district Executive Director Brad Wilson said the district is in the process of developing a strategic three-year plan that will identify upcoming major initiatives. As part of the process, they’re considering all the feedback collected this year, including input from a survey, focus groups and other resident communications, he said.
But 78% of respondents also indicated they would support paying higher fees and/or higher property taxes for an indoor pool facility.“It seems that every community survey that has ever gone out that this is a desired amenity and just hasn’t been really acted upon,” she said.
