A new mid-range OnePlus phone boasts a triple-camera setup but falls short in key areas like 4K video recording and ultrawide performance.
To achieve a lower price point compared to the flagship model ($749 vs $899), OnePlus has made some compromises. One of those areas is the camera system. While it shares a triple-camera setup with its more expensive sibling, the specifications are less impressive. The main camera boasts a 50MP Sony LYT-700 sensor with an F1.8 aperture and a 24mm field-of-view, slightly narrower than the 23mm lens on the flagship. This suggests a potential dip in low-light performance.
The telephoto camera also uses a 50MP sensor but relies on a smaller Samsung sensor and offers only 2X optical zoom, falling short of the flagship's 3X telephoto capability. Lastly, the ultrawide camera disappoints with a meager 8MP sensor, an F2.2 aperture, and a limited 112º field-of-view. In our camera tests, the phone scored 138.5 points overall, which is respectable considering the limitations. However, it significantly lags behind competitors in video recording, scoring only 124.3 points.Despite the decent image quality in still photography, with good dynamics, colors, and sharpness, the phone tends to oversharpen details, resulting in undesirable artifacts. Low-light performance is also passable, offering good dynamics and minimal noise. The 2X telephoto zoom performs admirably, delivering excellent exposure, color temperature, and tint, with well-balanced results. While minor oversharpening artifacts are present, the overall detail level is commendable, comparable to the flagship model. The 8MP ultrawide camera, despite its modest hardware, delivers decent dynamics, color temperature, and tint, although detail is lacking. To compensate, the phone employs oversharpening techniques, which are not ideal. The phone's 4K video recording capabilities are disappointing, limited to 1080p resolution at best. This falls short of what is expected from a 2025 phone, even in the mid-range segment. The 1080p ultrawide video samples exhibit good corner sharpness but lack overall detail. Videos captured with the telephoto camera are similarly underwhelming, with poor dynamics and exposure, although stabilization is commendable. Detail is passable, on par with the ultrawide camera. The selfie camera also struggles with 4K recording, limited to 1080p and 720p resolutions, another significant drawback for a 2025 device. While 1080p footage is acceptable, the lack of 4K recording across all cameras is a major concern for a phone in this price range. The overall camera performance is decent for casual users but may disappoint photography enthusiasts seeking advanced features and high-quality video recording
